Lingers for a lifetime

Eian-ji Temple was founded roughly 500 years ago during the Muromachi period and relocated over 100 years ago to its current site atop a hill with sweeping views. Besides the main temple, there are several smaller structures housing Buddha statues scattered throughout the wooded grounds. Strolling through the pastoral surroundings, one is imbued by the sounds of swaying leaves, bird calls, and distant bells which inspire a spiritual introspection. Zazen is a Zen Buddhist meditative art which enhances that spiritual introspection. Foregoing any sense of purpose, practitioners sit erect, legs crossed, eyes closed with relaxed breathing as the body, breath, and mind come into harmony. Sitting within that state of inner harmony is in and of itself the purpose. Opening oneself to zazen can be an enlightening experience which often lingers for a lifetime.

What you’ll do

The temple is located in the mountain surrounded peaceful woods with a breathtaking panorama of Kanazawa city.
Get dressed in a Samue, Monk’s working clothes, and learn about the history and difference of Buddhism and Shintoism from the Abbot. Then, the experience of Zen meditation at the hall of the temple. After zen meditation, please enjoy a clear view from the temple with the Abbot!

Goshuin Book.
(Goshuin is a stamp that is given at the temple, and the abbot will ponder each guest’s name to write into Kanji)
