Straight to the Source

Kanazawa is famous for its water. The Sea of Japan borders the city to the northwest, and the Sai River and the Asano River flow directly through the city center, where visitors can enjoy the beauty of the changing seasons along the flowing waters. Irrigation canal systems have existed in the city since the 16th century, providing the then-castle town of Kanazawa with water for daily use, as well as castle defense in the form of a moat. Natural springs dot the landscape, with one being famous as the namesake of the city. Led by a local guide well versed in the history and natural landscape of Kanazawa, learn about how interconnected water is in Kanazawa’s history and tour the canal systems, aqueducts, shrines, gardens, and the legendary spring that gives the city its name. Then, enjoy tasting a selection of different water samples from various sources throughout the region.
