Find beauty in "imperfection" with Ushikubi silk weaving
The curious name “Ushikubi” derives from the original name of the current town of Shiramine in Ishikawa Prefecture where silk is produced. Silkworm cultivation, and sericulture in general, are deeply embedded in the livelihoods of local residents. Cocoons that could be turned into pristine raw silk were sold to dealers for the valuable income they secured while the rest were treated as waste. Among these waste cocoons were the “partner cocoons” in which two silkworms made a single cocoon together. The silk spun from these cocoons results in an irregularly textured thread. The beauty of fabrics woven from these silks, however, is precisely in those imperfections. Generations of mountain women have spent the long winters weaving these fabrics in symbiosis with nature. Come see and feel the natural beauty of Ushikubi silk woven fabrics.
