A new era in lacquer work

Yamanaka Shikki is renowned for excellence in all areas of lacquerware production, from woodworking to lacquer painting and the urushi-e practice of lacquer art drawing. In pursuit of perfecting various urushi-e techniques, Yamanaka's artisan traveled the breadth of Japan to train with masters of the craft. Maki-e, one technique of adding decorative elements, involves creating pictures and patterns in lacquer by lightly dusting or brushing metal powder such as gold or silver onto the lacquer’s surface before it dries.

Masayuki opened his own studio in which he, his wife, and two sons work. He began his trade focusing solely on high quality utensils for tea ceremony. As demand for such products dropped, he added jewelry design to his repertoire. The family of craftsmen work closely together to respect classical techniques and design while working hard to introduce a new era in lacquer work. Masayuki and his family warmly welcome you to tour their workshop for a unique hands-on experience in urushi-e painting.
