Sculptural knots

Mizuhiki are the long, fine strands of paper drawn through starchy water that form the basis of the elaborately tied celebratory decorations traditionally displayed or exchanged at New Year’s and weddings. The tensile strands of paper, shiny and malleable from having been drawn through the starchy water, are tied into sculptural knots that resemble plums, butterflies, cranes, turtles, or other symbols of good luck. It is customary in Japan for the families of a bride and groom to exchange gifts wrapped in decorative mizuhiki designs. The tight knots of these designs represent the bonding of the new couple. In more contemporary applications, mizuhiki has become quite popular in making interior decorations, jewelry, hair adornments, and other accessories. Kanazawa is particularly renowned for its plump, fluffy style of mizuhiki. Join us in crafting your own mizuhiki accessory which will undoubtedly become a treasured memento of your experience.
