Feel the heartbeat of the Japanese people through taiko drumming.

The heartbeat of the Japanese people can be felt and heard through the sound of the taiko drum,” says Yukinari, manager of this Wadaiko (literally, “Japanese drum”) specialty shop. Taiko is almost synonymous with Japanese festivals, rituals, and traditional performing arts. Yukinari’s wadaiko shop has a 400-year history of building and repairing taiko. Upon entering, one is immediately struck by the sheer variety and sizes of taiko — from cute little children’s drums, to drums that can be slung over a shoulder while dancing or marching, to drums that are twice the height of an average person. The repair area of the shop is equally impressive with taiko having come from all over the country for maintenance work. One can frequently see the name of the artisan who created a taiko or the name of its owner making it fun to imagine the provenance of any given taiko. Participants will receive a brief lesson from a professional player so they may experience the power of taiko drumming for themselves. The tour then concludes with a 10-minute performance by seasoned taiko professionals.
