Listen to the fragrance
Kodo (the Way of Scent) is a 500-year-old traditional art rooted in the fragrance of waka poetry, cultural history, and the seasons. The act of internalizing scent in Kodo is expressed as listening to the fragrance rather than smelling it, for within subtly different fragrances, there are waka poems or stories to be heard. During the experience, listening to scent through the ancient game of kumikoh. In a non-competitive environment, kumikoh participants learn to listen to scents and hear the literary or historical themes they express. Everyone is a winner in the game of kumikoh which encourages and enables participants to enjoy the artistry of life. Upon leaving the studio, you will hear a whole new world opens to you through the various scents of everyday life wafting about the old streets of Kanazawa.
What you’ll do
Learn about the culture of incense ceremony, “Kodo” and its customs. Enjoy Genji-ko, which is one of the traditional ways of incense burning to compare five incense. After the experience, enjoy Japanese tea with traditional sweets.
What else you should know
The fragrance of incense is very delicate. Please do not to wear any perfume or strongly smelled cosmetics or fragrances, in order to recognize each note of incense.
