The Craft of True Fanatics

A lightweight handheld tool with a formidable cultural history, uchiwa fans have been utilized in Japan for over an estimated millennia, with certain archeological sources dating its usage back to the Kofun period (300-710 AD). While Nara’s Todaiji temple, among other prestigious sites of collection, houses relics linking usage to the imperial court, uchiwa were by no means relegated only to the noble class: common usage of uchiwa spread in the Edo era, when they transformed into their representative bamboo-based form still seen in contemporary times, and were used for everyday practices, such as fanning a flame or grilling yakitori. Among the various styles enjoyed throughout Japan, the Kurikawa Shibu-uchiwa originating from Kumamoto Prefecture ranks as one of the top three designs among Japan. These functional, fluttering works of craftsmanship might seem delicate at first glance, but possess surprising strength and resilience. Crafted from split bamboo, covered in washi paper, and coated in a fermented persimmon concentration that acts as a natural pesticide, the family of master craftsmen at this workshop have over 400 years of experience creating these exceptional, refreshing products.
