The Bounty of the Japanese Sea

Whether it is adorning rolls of sushi, giving flavor and garnish to miso soup, or simply eaten as a delicious, crunchy snack, Nori seaweed is a staple of Japanese cuisine. Nori, in particular, is known for its fragrant, roasted quality, with a melt-in-your-mouth sweetness and umami. Before being harvested, however, the seaweed forms a vital part of the marine habitat—one known for its stunning seaside landscape. And, Katsuyoshi-san hopes to share that beauty with visitors. Located in the bountiful fishing grounds of the Ariake Sea in Saga Prefecture, this Nori harvesting company has three-generations of experience bringing the finest seaweed to Japan. This experience will have you cruising out into the Ariake Bay with Katsuyoshi family for a first-hand look into the sea area for harvesting Nori seaweed to understand just why this seaweed is so vital to the cuisine of Japan. If you visit there during the season of February and March, you can see the Nori harvesting process.

What you’ll do

Board a boat and cruise along the Ariake Bay for a personal tour of the Nori Seaweed Farms. After, get a look into the roasting process and try several different Nori offerings, with a special gift to take with you when you leave.
