A Timeless Spark, An Icon of Peace

A bright, delightful tradition unchanged for over 300 years, senko hanabi fireworks are a dazzling element of Japanese culture with explosive origins. First imported into Japan by Portuguese merchants during the 16th century, guns proliferated throughout the country. However, the period of political stability in the Edo period under the rule of the Tokugawa shogunate - in addition to the gun ban enforced by Tokugawa Ieyasu - resulted in new innovations to gunpowder's usage. Initial hand-held fireworks utilized dried rice stalks affixed with powder; the Kansai region, which lacked rice, instead substituted paper in its place, which rapidly popularized in other regions as well. A staple in countless communities and traditional festivals in days of the past, currently this Fukuoka firework atelier diligently preserves this radiant, hand-held craft, working as one of the last remaining places that support the continuation of both the Eastern and Western senko hanabi firework styles. Add a captivating sparkle and shine to your next Kyushu visit with this cultural, hands-on workshop.
