The Acclaimed Kiln of Warlords

In the rolling hills of Sasebo in Nagasaki Prefecture, one can find a historic pottery style, known as Mikawachi-yaki. With a storied history dating back over 400 years, this pottery tradition was championed by the Hirado warlord clan and finds its roots in the complex interactions and synthesis between the Japanese and Korean cultures. After the neighboring pottery town of Karatsu fell out of favor with Japanese ruler Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Mikawachi became a kiln of central importance to Kyushu. The ceramics were known for their outstanding technical mastery of porcelain and elaborate, hand-painted imagery. To maintain their growing power, the Hirado Clan restricted production of the wares, keeping the methods a closely-guarded secret. However, with the opening of Japan to foreign powers, Mikawachi-ware saw high demand and an international reputation, growing with its increasing export. Currently led by the 17th-generation headmaster Akishi, the Mikawachi Pottery Kiln and Museum provide an unmatched opportunity to dive into the long tradition of this exquisite pottery practice.
