Iconic designs

Kyokarakami, which translates to “Tang Chinese paper”, is delicately printed paper that was mostly used by aristocrats to write poems and letters beginning in the Tang Dynasty in China. The woodblock used to create the traditional designs of kyokarakami must be hand-carved from magnolia wood, and the patterns printed are mostly patterns passed down from ancient times that are inspired by nature. As Japan began producing its own kyokarakami in Kyoto during the Heian Period, kyokarakami became a popular material for interior design. Throughout Japanese history, it was used as screens on sliding doors, as wallpaper, and as interior decoration. Kyokarakami is still produced today and commonly found in Japanese stationary and interior design. Discover the creative and calming process of printing intricate patterns on washi paper with kyokarakami.
