Organic creativity

Bamboo, one of the first materials used by early humans, is widely used in the everyday life of many Asian cultures. Though a part of the grass family, bamboo is resilient and is one of the fastest growing plants in the world. Bamboo’s sturdiness and the way it can be split into fine fibers, allows for both weaving and carving, making it a favored material for craft. With over six hundred species of bamboo found in Japan, bamboo has become especially popular with Japanese artists and craftsmen. Takezaiku, Japanese bamboowork, is a traditional craft used in architecture, utilitarian objects, and decorative arts. Towards the end of the 19th century, takezaiku became accepted as an art form, with basket weaving being the most popular. Today takezaiku continues to be widely used, and can often be spotted throughout Japan. Learn the intricate craft of this strong material used for centuries at this takezaiku workshop.
