Wagashi sweets making in a Japanese traditional home and tea ceremony in a zen temple
Originally a castle town, Izushi bustles with businesses and visitors. Throughout the town’s history, the local traditional Japanese confectioneries, wagashiya, have been popular with residents and tourists alike. Meet Yasuhiko, a third generation wagashiya owner. Upon entering the shop, you will be greeted by photographs dating back to its 1925 opening. Yasuhiko will introduce you to the history of his shop and the town of Izushi, after which we will proceed to the kitchen of a traditional, old Japanese private home to experience the actual making of wagashi. Following the sweets making workshop, we will enjoy our sweets at a tea ceremony in a nearby zen temple. It’s like stepping back in time to the days of the samurai.
What you’ll do
Learn how to make two types of delicate wagashi. Enjoy your finished creations with some delicious matcha green tea in a historic tea room.
