Reading Between the Gold Lines

Coming from the Japanese words for "gold" (kin) and "mending" (tsugi), the traditional practice of kintsugi is known for the beautiful lines of gold lacquer running across a repaired vessel. Rather than hiding the evidence of breakage, this Zen-inspired joinery method aims to show the importance of past memory and the new life brought to a restored object. According to host and master craftsperson Kobayashi-san, although the process is artistic, kintsugi is instead a philosophical practice, one where the restorer and their name fade into the background to illuminate the beauty revealed in repairing the world. In this experience, learn the history and techniques required for the practice of kintsugi and repair your very own vessel according to traditional techniques.
