Poignant beauty
Tsujigahana is a type of shibori (tie-dying) technique that employs both drawing and foil impressions. The process begins with drawing the desired pattern on the white fabric, tying the fabric, and finally dyeing it. After the dyeing, the tied areas are released, revealing the white patterns, which are accented by ink drawing. One of its characteristics of this particular technique, which has its origins in the Nara period (710-794AD), is the subtle, but ever-present evidence of decay of the flowers and leaves, reminding viewers of the cycle of life and death.
