Historic allure

Wagasa, the iconic oil-paper umbrella of Japan, was first introduced to Japan from China in the Heian Period (794-1185), and was not so much a practical tool to block rain, but was a tool to protect aristocrats and the imperial family from evil spirits. Later, technology was developed so the umbrellas could open and closer as one wished, making the tool even more convenient. The oil paper covering the bamboo skeleton made the umbrella sturdy and waterproof and provided shade for its user. During the Edo Period, wagasa became a common item and fashion accessory for people of all ranks. It was during this time that wagasa craft began to thrive and beautiful, vibrant designs emerged. Wagasa were were seen as a popular accessory for those attending festivals, tea ceremonies, and entertainment. With the emergence of Western umbrellas in the Meiji period, wasaga decreased in popularity, with only a handful of stores in Japan currently continuing the craft. Today wagasa can be seen in religious ceremonies, festivals, and entertainment.
