Tradition Rooted in Nature
An art form with roots back to the 8th Century, flower arrangement, or ikebana in Japanese, is a tradition long considered representative of the values and aesthetics of Japanese culture. While ikebana first developed as a practice for altar offerings, it evolved alongside tea ceremony into a practice for all seasons and all occasions. Flower arrangements are usually set within a special viewing nook called a tokonoma and set the atmosphere for a home or for a tea room gathering. Nestled within a serene garden and temple near Shin-Osaka Station, host and ikebana grandmaster Sōgo-san practices flower arrangement with a particular attention on its deeper interactions with traditional tea ceremony. In this experience, learn the techniques needed to bring the beauty of flower arranging into the tea room and enjoy a traditional preparation of matcha and sweets to end.
