Bubbling vents of volcanic steam, towering todomatsu fir trees branching out over the skyline, crystal-clear water collected in the caldera lake that freezes over into solidly sheets once the temperature drops, shoreside pools of naturally-formed onsen hotsprings: these are just a few of the features that compose the uniquely diverse ecosystem of Akan-Mashu and Lake Kussharo. And hidden inside this brilliant scenery, for those who take the time to search, are a range of some of Hokkaido's most beloved species of birds - inclduing the shimaenaga, a charming bird that captivates countless with its tiny, round form. Bird lovers gather to the area in hopes of spotting this magnificent creature flitting around the trees or above the placid waters of the lake, as well as for a chance to spot other species of birds that call Hokkaido home. Join a nature guide and photographer, with countless major publications on the shimaenaga under his belt and insider knowledge on all of the bird hot-spots in the Akan-mashu region. Take in stunning scenery as you trek through the different ecosystems in search of Hokkaido’s birds, basking in the natural beauty of Hokkaido.

Explore the diverse ecosystems in Akan-Mashu surrounding Lake Kussharo. Under the guidance of a the leading birdwatching photographer specialist who also operates as a local nature guide, search for a chance to spot some of Hokkaido’s elusive birds. Immerse into Eastern Hokkaido's natural landscapes while birdwatching.
