What a Tangled Web We Weave

Kumihimo, or braided cords, are a traditional Japanese craft dating back to the 6th century, a time of significant artistic and political change in Japan—including the introduction of Buddhism. Adorned by early samurai, kumihimo was used both functionally to lace armor and decoratively to showcase wealth and prestige. As the craft became more popular, the invention of the marudai weaving disc allowed for the development of new and more intricate woven patterns. In contemporary Japan, the woven braids are now used for wearing and adorning kimono. Since its founding in 1652, this workshop in Ueno, Tokyo has been employing hand-dyeing and hand-knitting techniques, continuing the beautiful handiwork of the kumihimo tradition. In this experience, visit the workshop and learn the techniques required to dye and weave your own kumihimo cord.
