Meet and Gr(eat)

Sumo is the national sport of Japan, evoking around the world imagery of massive wrestlers clothed in little more than loincloths. This iconic practice dates back to prehistoric Japan, a traditional martial art which grew from agricultural rituals for a bountiful harvest. As the fighting style grew, a rich and unique lifestyle developed for the wrestlers, including special clothing, housing, and traditional foods. After leaving the ring, sumo wrestlers enjoy a hearty meal known as “chanko-nabe”, a seasonal one-pot dish meant to sustain their large appetite. In this experience, visit a local sumo restaurant and feast on a traditional meal, accompanied by sumo champions. Learn about their challenging and rewarding traditional lifestyle, and get to know the other side of these fierce sportsmen.
