A Harmonoius Spirit
In the words of Aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba, "Aikido is not a way to fight with or defeat enemies; it is a way to reconcile the world and make all human beings one family." Created in the 1920s and 30s, Aikido combines joint-locking and empty-handed throwing techniques with practices developed explicitly to disengage attackers wielding weapons. Yet, despite being a martial art form, the goal of aikido is not to fight, but rather to avoid violence using whatever means necessary. Peaceful resolution between people, and self-improvement of one's own spirit provide the immutable core of Aikido's tenets, to the extent that practitioners are discouraged from engaging in direct sparring - only kata forms are practiced diligently with opposing partners. This links not only to the ethos of the martial art itself, but also to Japanese spirituality: in the dojo, beneath the watchful gaze of the kami enshrined on the kamidana shelf, athletes grapple in white gi's and white obi that symbolize the pure intentions one must bring to practice. Join a local community of Aikido athletes and participate in an authentic training session with martial arts masters.
