Authentic homestay with Shouichi, a local fisherman and his family

Details

  • Location: Rikuzentakata, Iwate

  • 23 hours

  • 4 people max. Minimum of 2 participants required. (Solo guest may book at the price of 2 participants)

  • Offered in Japanese and a little English. Translation (English, Spanish or Chinese) is available during morning activity, with additional charge.

Warm hospitality

Shouichi is a carpenter of the Kesen carpentry style, which originated in the Kesen region (now comprised of Rikuzentakata, Ofunato and Sumita in Iwate prefecture) during the Edo period. Today Kesen carpentry is known particularly for the way it does not utilize nails, screws or glue but depends exclusively on interlocking wooden pieces.

What you’ll do

Meet the locals and enjoy home-cooked dishes with the carpenter’s family. In the morning, try your hand at one of the offered experiences (either carpentry, harvesting or making traditional sweets).

3 home-cooked meals, 1 morning activity: carpentry (making a simple stand etc), harvesting vegetables or making traditional Japanese sweets (eg mochi).
