Filling in the Blanks

With centuries of history and a diverse expression of techniques and creativity in every brushstroke, calligraphy embodies both beauty and simplicity. Known as shodo, or, "the way of the brush," Japanese calligraphy was first introduced to Japan by the Tang Dynasty and has since developed into its own distinct aesthetic using both kanji and kana, and also possessing concrete connections to Buddhism. It's a craft of incredible precision and self-discipline, requiring countless repetitions of a single character in aim of perfection. Shodo calligraphy infuses various other Japanese philosophies in the practice, from "mushin," or the Buddhist concept of a meditative, no-mind state of flow, to "ma," the idea that beauty is found in blank space and silence, both of which are expertly represented in the sweeping expanses of calligraphy art. Join a university professor of calligraphy and standing director of the Japan Calligraphy Institute for national instruction on the art of calligraphy, from basic brushstrokes and essential tools, to hands-on tutorials and cultural context.
