Tranquility in Tea

Gyokusen-en, one of the oldest gardens in Kanazawa, evokes an atmosphere of tranquil timelessness. Ensconced within the garden is the Saisetsu-tei Tea House which has a 400-year history of feudal lords sharing tea with their guests. The traditional tea ceremony performed at Saisetsu-tei breathes life into the principles and philosophies of sixteenth-century writer/poet Sen no Rikyū, widely regarded as Japan’s most influential tea ceremony master. Sen no Rikyū sought to have tea houses nestled within tranquil, rustic gardens providing a setting for strangers to meet in a moment of mutual respect and peace while sharing a cup of tea. His philosophy was that each tea ceremony is an opportunity to indelibly imprint upon the heart these serene, fleeting meetings. Join us for tea in the beautiful, history-filled Gyokusen-en Garden, and experience your own serendipitous moment of tranquility that will forever reside within your heart.

What you’ll do

Learn about the culture of tea ceremony and its customs. Enjoy the first bowl of matcha (green tea,) which the master will prepare. And next, try your hand at whisking your own tea, with wagashi, Japan's seasonal sweets.
