The Right Frame of Mind
Developing alongside the more widely known art of calligraphy, gakuso refers to the craft of paper-making and picture framing which preserves an artist’s brushwork. The techniques of the practice date back to the 7th and 8th centuries, a time of intense cultural exchange between China and Japan. As the calligraphy paper is so delicate, a refined touch and skillset is necessary to ensure symmetry of the ends and preservation for decades to come. In this highly unique experience, tour a gakuso atelier and learn about creation process for traditional hanging scrolls, frames, and bindings, as well as the history of calligraphy. Then, utilize craft techniques to make your own goshuincho, a traditional stamp book for recording memories.
What you’ll do
Visit a gakuso framing atelier and learn about craft and its relationship with calligraphy. Then, make your own stamp book according to traditional techniques.
