Gone to the Other Shore
Hidden within rolling hills on the outskirts of Fukuyama City sits a tranquil Buddhist temple, delicately arranged in harmony with nature. A special site connected to the historic Rinzai Zen sect, the temple is home to stunning buildings, serene gardens, and nature walks. The Rinzai tradition places a particular focus on kensho, meaning “seeing the truth of one’s nature." In order to achieve this, techniques including zazen seated meditation, special cuisine, sutra recitation, and various methods of introspection are utilized. The practice of traditional Japanese arts, such as calligraphy, tea, and gardening, also holds a place of importance in Rinzai Zen. In this experience, spend the day at a beautiful Zen temple. Experience zazen, sutra writing, garden walks, a traditional meal of local cuisine, and to finish the day, a peaceful bowl of tea. Walking in the footsteps of the monks, you will get a sense of the practice necessary to achieve kensho.
