As Fine as a Frog’s Hair
Known across Japan as “The Land of Brushes,” Kumano has championed the traditional craft of fude brush-making since the Edo Period. Kumano-fude are most notably used in the art of calligraphy, due to their fine tips and koshi, meaning “firmness." Making each brush requires meticulous attention, ensuring that each hair points in the correct direction and is aligned perfectly to a point. In recent years, kumano-fude have also seen growing popularity in the beauty industry, using traditional techniques for modern makeup brushes. In this experience, enter a traditional fude workshop and learn about the history and techniques of the tradition. Then, utilizing ethically-sourced animal hair, craft your own brush under the guidance of the masters and try your hand at the art of Japanese calligraphy.
