Turning the Pages of History
Over 350 years in Japan's past at the start of the Edo Period, an era filled with flourishing art and pop culture, isolationist policies, and the development of bustling city centers, lay the origins of this historic washi paper merchandiser. The business, which has lasted through government changes and wars and been depicted in ukiyo-e wood blocks and antique photographs, still successfully operates from its original location, an unchanging icon withstanding time. While throughout the years of its operations, it had expanded to diversified industries, Japanese washi paper has remained always as its essential core, even to this day. By partnering with master washi craftspeople from studios all across the country, they actively sustain the art of washi making in Japan. The products they sell are beloved by customers of all backgrounds, from personal crafters to internationally renowned art museums. Take a guided tour of this legendary washi manufacturer, browsing historical documents, artisan samples, and the showroom. Then, put your inspiration down on paper in a hands-on washi-making workshop led by a highly qualified company representative and take home a page of Japan's cultural history.
What you’ll do
Take a private guided tour through the company's historical museum, learning both about the history of Tokyo and the manufacturer. See exhibitions of artisan craftwork in both the gallery and in the showroom. Then, make your own washi paper to take home. Explore the store after the workshop concludes to see washi crafted by artisans from all across Japan.
