Reframing natural art
First adapted by the Japanese from ancient Chinese horticultural practice over 700 years ago, bonsai are reflections of the natural world. Literally translated to “planted in a container,” bonsai more broadly is the art of pruning and cultivating small trees in pots to achieve the subdued and stately aesthetic of an old tree in nature. Therefore, despite mimicking the natural world, bonsai trees require human intervention to thrive and maintain their iconic appearance. Routinely repotting bonsai prevents the tree from becoming pot-bound, in which the lack of space and nutrients limits the growth and health of the bonsai tree. While size and species impact how often a bonsai tree should be repotted, most trees will need to be transplanted between once every two to five years. Successful repotting requires knowledge of a range of different factors: the right pot shape and size, the correct soil mixture to suit your tree’s climate, and the season are all essential to allowing your repotted bonsai to flourish in the future. Under the guidance of a bonsai master, learn how to complete this challenging but crucial process of maintaining bonsai.
What you’ll do

About the OMiya Bonsai Village
This experience is located in Omiya Bonsai Village, a neighborhood known worldwide for its multiple bonsai nurseries and bonsai museum. This village was formed in 1925 after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, when Tokyo’s bonsai nurseries were affected by the disaster and needed a new place to rebuild. Ōmiya was selected by these nurseries for its clean water and good soil, essential for cultivating healthy bonsai.
