The Art of Letting Go
Balance and breathing characterize Zazen meditation, a Buddhist practice that preaches tireless dedication and physical awareness to achieve spiritual peace of mind. While other sects of Buddhism stress the need to chant sutra, speak mantras with hidden meanings, or renounce the comforts of material life, Zazen stresses enlightenment through the daily practice of meditation. With a relaxed yet concentrated mind, practitioners allow their thoughts and emotions to flow unobstructed through their body like waves, and let each pass just as easily. By combining the mental practice with a focus on maintaining proper physical posture, total balance can be achieved.
Located in a sprawling temple complex in central Kyoto, which has countless traditional Japanese gardens, origins dating back almost a thousand years, and historic ties to Sen no Rikyu and the creation of tea ceremony, guests are invited to come and experience this restorative practice under the instruction of the head monk. While the grounds are normally closed to the public, enjoy exclusive access to this tranquil temple, tucked away from the bustle of Kyoto's streets.
