Refined beauty
Japan has a long history of dance, reflected in the oldest surviving text on Japan's origins which features a goddess dancing. Nihon Buyo, which literally means 'Japanese dance' emerged from the legacy of dance in daily life and in religious settings, and took a more defined shape via various stage arts of the time, most prominently Kabuki (stage drama). Started by Izumo no Okuni, a dancer and attendant at the Grand Shrine of Izumo, Nihon Buyo over the years grew to develop various styles. Today there are the five schools of Nihon Buyo, including Nishikawa (1700), Fujima (1704), Bando(1775), Hanayagi (1849), and Wakayagi(1893).
