The Sweets Beloved by Samurai
Odawara was once a flourishing castle town, filled with samurai warriors, bustling merchant culture, and a rich cultural heritage. The head of the Okubo clan, who reigned as lord of the Odawara Castle towards the end of the Edo Period, was also a renowned tea ceremony enthusiast, which in turn spawned a thriving culture of wagashi confections in Odawara. These delicate, delectable works of edible art are traditionally served during Japanese tea ceremonies to mellow the slightly bitter flavor of matcha and to provide a stunning visual expression of seasonality that reflects both elegant aesthetics and warm-hearted hospitality. Join a 2nd-generation wagashi confectioner in his Odawara wagashi store to learn how to craft your own wagashi Japanese confections in a city overflowing with rich history and culinary heritage.
