Made from a Different Mold
With a history dating back over 1,000 years to the time of warlord Minamoto no Yoriyoshi, the cast iron tradition of yamagata imono is renowned for both its intricate and enduring nature. The craft developed thanks to the unique properties of the sand brought by the Mamigasaki River, as it was particularly suited for use in casting molds. While at first metal fittings, Buddhist statues, and other household goods were made, improved techniques led to the production of chagama—iron kettles for the Japanese Tea Ceremony. Adorned with delicate patterns and cast in various natural shapes, the artisanal chagamas became sought after across Japan and cemented Yamagata as the center of such traditional ironwork in the country. In this exclusive experience, step into the workshop behind the gallery and see the process involved in the casting of yamagata imono. After the tour, take home a special gift crafted by the masters.
