Into the Woods
While Kyoto is undeniably known as Japan's cultural capital, brimming with ancient temples, side alleys lined with historic buildings, and an array of artisans sustaining traditional Japanese crafts, the region also boasts natural views that rival the beauty of the city center. At the Ashiu Forest Research Station, a 4,186-hectare site under the management of Kyoto University that conducts both research and preservation activities, a variety of unique biodiversities thrive, drawing in both local and global academics, as well as nature lovers. The luscious forest is protected from human activity and closed off to the public, with only certified personnel permitted to enter or tour Ashiu Forest. Over 1000 types of plant species, 400 fungi species, and countless rare or endangered wildlife, such as the Japanese serow and mountain hawk-eagle, have been recorded within the area. On this trek through Kyoto's verdant landscape, a forest guide will lead you through the forest, providing in-depth discussion on the forest's biodiversity, local conservation efforts, and the locations of flora and fauna. Enjoy fresh air and rejuvenating tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of Japan’s cities, immersed in Kyoto's nature.
