Soulful fun

Experience the reverberations and mesmerizing drama of this larger-than-life drum! Having its mythological origins in Japanese folklore, the taiko was said to be invented when a goddess danced on top of a sake barrel to lure the sun goddess Amaterasu out from hiding. Since its historical origins in the 6th century, the taiko has traditionally been used in theater, warfare, and religious ceremonies. It was only in 1952 when Daihachi Oguchi came up with the idea of playing taiko with multiple drums that modern taiko playing began. Today the wadaiko is appreciated at festivals and performances all over the world as it continues to provide a steady pulse at the heart of traditional Japanese culture.
