There are various theories about the origins of manga, Japan’s internationally beloved comics. Caricatures from the 12th and 13th centuries, known as Chōjū-giga (鳥獣戯画)depicting animals acting like humans are thought to be the earliest form of Japanese comics. These are playful short stories of animals using tools, doing business and participating in Buddhist practices. On the other hand, some historians argue that manga doesn’t date that far back and that the first work of manga, Toba Ehon, originated from an Osaka publisher during the Edo Period. Since then, there were many variations of manga- but the most recent resurgence of modern manga is linked to the influence of the American occupation, after World War II. As such, American comic books shaped Japanese manga, creating the styles we are familiar with today. Nowadays, manga is an ever-evolving part of pop culture.
