Tsuzure-ori is a type of Nishijin weaving, a premium-quality weaving weaving that originated in the Ukyo ward of Kyoto. Amongst the varieties of Nishijin weaving, Tsuzure-ori is unique because of its usage of the artisan’s nails. Ridges are filed into fingernails so they can act as combs and create intricate designs in the brocade weave. Using plain-weave, the artisan creates detailed designs based on patterns and images on paper which they refer to as they weave. The detailed textile of tsuzure-ori, which was officially recognized as a traditional Japanese craft in 1976, resemble watercolor paintings in its elegant blending of color. Today, tsuzure-ori artisans continue working hard to preserve their delicate craft and their artwork takes the form of religious tapestries, obis, and household tapestries. Let this tsuzure-ori expert, one who has been decorated with the Order of the Sacred Treasure Award, guide you through the centuries-old craft of beautiful colors and intricate techniques.
